Payback is deadly! The Ninjas are back! Brandishing swords and fists, leaping and kicking, wielding blow darts and explosives, they know a thousand ways to kill. Martial arts legend Sho Kosugi (Enter the Ninja) delivers a heart-pounding display of strength, speed and lethal Ninja know-how in this action-packed thriller that takes us back to the good old days of the Kung Fu extravaganza. When a band of Ninja assassins slaughters the family of Cho Osaki (Kosugi), he flees to America in the hope of building a new life. A former Ninja himself, Osaki tries to escape his deadly past but soon discovers he has become the pawn of a ruthless drug trafficker - an American Ninja intent on killing anyone who crosses his path... including Osaki! Action veteran Sam Firstenberg (Avenging Force) directed this entertaining martial arts actioner, featuring top-notch action scenes and mind-blowing stunts. Co-starring legendary villain, Professor Toru Tanaka (An Eye For An Eye) and produced by Cannon legends, Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan.
Special Features: Audio Commentary by Director Sam Firstenberg and Stunt Coordinator Steven Lambert | Intro by Sam Firstenberg | Behind-the-Scenes Gallery | Original Theatrical Trailer
The Kosugi classic finally available on blu-ray in Region A (this was previously released in Germany on blu-ray Region B locked) and twice on DVD in standard def with pan and scan transfers. This blu-ray is presented in the film's proper theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and it looks good. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this film from my childhood finally in Hi-Def. One of the best features on this blu-ray is the audio commentary track which is hosted by the director of the film Sam Firstenberg, whose credits include: Ninja III (sequel to this film), American Ninja 1,2 Breakin' 2 and stunt coordinator Steve Lambert. They do a great job of telling the stories about making the film and detailing scene by scene the creative and groundbreaking stunt work and action done by them and Kosugi. The commentary they provided really gave me a new found appreciation for this movie which i wore out on VHS as a child watching it over and over. One thing to note is during the commentary they mention and point out that a few scenes that were cut from the original theatrical release were put back into this blu-ray (and were previously available on the MGM DVD) but the director noted that the original cut of the film was originally over 2 hours in length, according to the director Cannon films made him cut the film down to 90 minutes since that was their studio rule. I would have loved to be able to see all the uncut scenes reinserted back into the film, since some stuff that you see in the trailer has still not made the light of day. I would have given this blu-ray 5 stars but it is missing one of the features that is advertised on the back of the case which is a "Behind the Scenes Photo Gallery." So 4 stars it is. I highly recommend this blu-ray and I feel that we are very lucky to see this on blu-ray.
