Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, The (2 Disc Special Edition DVD)

Two traveling companions, George (Ray Lovelock of Autopsy) and Edna (Christine Galbo of The Killer Must Kill Again), come across a small town infested with the "living dead" that are satisfying their cannibalistic hunger on anyone they come across. Discovering that an agricultural machine using radiation waves is at the root of all the havoc, George and Edna fight for survival and their innocence as they are pursued by a relentless detective (Arthur Kennedy of The Antichrist and Fantastic Voyage) who is convinced they are responsible for the ghoulish acts of violence plaguing the countryside. All this leads to a gruesome showdown at the Manchester Morgue - an ending that knots a horrifying twist in the lives of all involved!
Also known as Let Sleeping Corpses Lie and Don't Open The Window, this carefully constructed and beautifully photographed tale of the undead roaming the English countryside comes from acclaimed Spanish Director Jorge Grau. Now fully restored and remastered in High Definition from the original camera negative, Blue Underground is proud to present The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue in this 2-Disc Special Edition bursting at the seams with exclusive new Extras!

Slaughter/Slaughter's Big Ripoff

Jim Brown tackles the mob in two action-packed '70s blaxploitation gems. In Slaughter (Rip Torn, Stella Stevens. 1972/94 min.), Brown avenges his parents' murder. In Slaughter's Big Rip Off (Ed McMahon. 1973/94 min.), he goes after the syndicate's list of corrupt cops and politicians. 2 DVDs. Color/R/widescreen.
Great double-feature. Great price, great fun. Perfect movies for a rainy day, with nothing to do. Jim Brown kicking major butt, and bedding beautiful babes. Both movies have basically the same plot: People close to Slaughter(Brown), get killed by the syndicate, and ex green-beret Jim Brown must take it to the mob with guns, knives, fists, etc. Check out Jonny Carson's old side-kick, Ed McMahon in Slaughter's big rip-off, as a whiny mob boss. Throw these DVD's in, check your brain at the door, and enjoy!!

At the Earth's Core (Kino Cinema Classics) (Blu-Ray)

At the Earth's Core (Kino Cinema Classics) (Blu-Ray)
They're in it deep, now! Murderous monsters, scantily clad prehistoric playmates and telepathic pterodactyls inhabit the center of our world in this colorful fantasy-adventure about a manned "drill-craft" boring its way to the center of the Earth! Starring sci-fi superstars Doug McClure (The Land That Time Forgot), Peter Cushing (Nothing But the Night) and Caroline Munro (Maniac), this subterranean chiller is the most endearingly whimsical entertainment on - or under - the planet's surface! There's more than lava at the Earth's core. There's also Pellucidar: an underground empire where gargantuan pterodactyls torture and enslave all humanoids - including the lovely Dia (Munro). But all that could change when a surface-dwelling scientist (Cushing) and an American businessman (McClure) drive their powerful "Iron Mole" straight into Pellucidar... stirring up a great deal more than dirt, rocks and lava! Wonderfully directed by sci-fi specialist, Kevin Connor (The People That Time Forgo

Wild River 1960

With a touch of humanism and social conviction Wild River focuses on a TVA dam project that will evict a family (matriarch Van Fleet) and her significant number of black employees. Lee Remick, as well as being jaw-dropping stunning as a country lass, is a widowed daughter of said family and graces the screen with another of her magnificent performances. Montgomery Clift's character, Chuck Glover, has the unenviable job as the ministry employee who must shoo the tenants to vacate. Monty and Remick establish a relationship which helps convert Cliff to the side of the righteous. Kazan's build seems slower than the erratic pace of the plot but it is still superior Hollywood fare shot in magnificent cinemascope.
There is little to add to the eloquent appreciations of Wild River by other users. Still, I want to pay my tribute. My father took me to see the film when I was a little girl and it made such an impression on me I have been searching for it for years. Odd, since I remembered nothing of the plot, retaining only fleeting images of autumn colours, Lee

Planet of the Apes '68 [Blu-ray]

20th Century Fox released the film previously on DVD by itself and in a box set with the rest of the Apes films plus a bonus DVD of extras. Now, for those who just want the first (and best) film of the series and all of the extras, Fox has released an excellent two-DVD special edition of Planet of the Apes to celebrate its 35th anniversary.
The DVD's extras get off to a shaky start with the two lackluster audio commentaries. The first is by legendary composer, Jerry Goldsmith, and the second by actors Roddy McDowall, Natalie Trundy, Kim Hunter and make-up artist John Chambers. Both commentaries could benefit from some extensive editing. There is way too much dead air that one has to sit through to get to the few interesting tidbits of information. The DVD producers should have edited down these commentaries to only the scenes in the movie that are actually commented on, like with the audio tracks on the Glengarry Glen Ross and The Right Stuff DVDs.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray]

Beneath the Planet of the Apes is the second movie in the series and my personal favorite. Probably the darkest of all five movies, the story begins with Taylor and Nova riding through the Forbidden Zone where the first one left off. Taylor mysteriously disappears, but Nova is able to find Brent, the only survivor of the crew sent to rescue Taylor. After seeing Ape City, Brent and Nova go into the Forbidden Zone where they find an underground city of mutants who worship an atomic bomb as their god. Meanwhile, the Apes are planning an attack on the Forbidden City. The story is very good and also examines the prejudices of the Apes that are so similar to the ones of the humans they so despise. This is not the happiest movie, especially the ending, but it is still a great movie and the ending does fit.
James Franciscus plays Brent, the astronaut who survives the crash, and plays it very well. His

Escape from the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray]

Following the cataclysmic finale of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, there was only one logical direction for the series to go---> back to the future. The result is an illogically conceived and satirical prequel that will amuse and delight and ultimately devastate with its bleak Shakesperean tragedy.
When Taylor's spacecraft unexpectedly splashes down in 1973 and is retrieved by a military envoy, the three astronauts that emerge from the capsule are not revealed to be Taylor, Landon and Dodge, but rather the astonishing simian ape-o-nauts Cornelius, Zira and Milo... the third of which is a completely disposeable character who is appropriately killed off very early by a caged zoo gorilla who was probably jealous that the talking simian chimpanzees were getting all of the attention. With Milo out of the picture, the story focuses on the relationship between Cornelius and Zira in ways that were not afforded the opportunity in the two previous films and is filled with tongue-in-cheek episodes inspired by Pierre Boulle's original novel as Cornelius and Zira go around "aping" 20th century human culture (a subtle and clever mockery of our own) in an attempt to make themselves fit in to our society.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray]

This fourth entry in the Planet of The Apes is by far the most straightforward and violent in the series. The scenes of revolt by the apes are tame by todays standards but are still effective. especially considering the small budget director J.Lee Thompson had to work with. He makes the film look much bigger in scope than it really was.
The story begins with Caesar, the son of Zira and Cornelius from The 3 earlier films and it was a great touch allowing Roddy McDowall to portray both father and son. He goes into a city with mentor Armando. The circus owner from the third film Escape From The Planet of The Apes and again portrayed by Ricardo Montalban and sees what has become of his fellow apes. They were at first being treated as pets to replace the dogs and cats that were wiped out by a plague only to become slave labor for humans. He cries out when a fellow ape is beaten and runs away. Armando goes to the police to explain and is interrogated. In the process he kills himself rather than betray Caesar to the authorities. Who were never sure that the baby of the talking apes was really killed as shown in the previous film and believe Armando was lying to protect Caesar.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray]

Rarely does the restoration of deleted scenes added back into a film work to its benefit. The Extended Edition of Battle for the Planet of the Apes (available previously only as a Japanese laserdisc) is one of those rare exceptions. The fifth and final chapter in the Apes theatrical series is generally regarded as its weakest link. It had the lowest budget of all of the films in the series and it painfully shows and looks more like it's a made-for-TV movie. In fact, it feels almost like a pilot for the Planet of the Apes Television Series.
The film begins in the year 2670 and is bookended with John Houston as the revered ape Lawgiver reading from the sacred scrolls like a bedtime storyteller, "In the beginning, God created beast and man so that they could live in harmony and share dominion over this world..." From here the story is told in flashback and the viewer is left scratching their heads by the befuddling logic. Events not clearly explained are left to the viewer to make assumptions or draw conclusions about the contradictory order of events. It must be assumed that a nuclear war had devasted the Earth

Snuff

Deep in South America, a Manson-like cult leader named Satan cavorts with his bevy of beautiful biker-chick followers while compelling them to kill in his name. When sexy American actress Terry London arrives with producer Max Marsh to shoot a new movie there, the creepy cult targets her and her friends with plans of murder, mayhem and the grisly sacrifice of her unborn baby. Is the final bloody massacre only a movie? Or is it the shocking footage of an actual murder committed before the camera?
This film was a groundbreaking piece of advertising ballyhoo, but anyone who believe the girl tacked on at the end of the film is actually being killed should have their heads examined. The rest of the film is a 1971 film called THE SLAUGHTER, directed by Michael and Roberta Findlay, the king and Queen of sexploitation in the 60's & first half of the 70's. Michael was killed by the spinning blades of the back of a helicopter in the mid-70's. Roberta started making adult films and finished her career with a few unmemorable horror flicks. She is still alive.
