Starcrash (1978, Luigi Cozzi)

Outlaw smugglers Stella Star and Akton manage to pick up a castaway while running from the authorities, who turns out to be the only survivor from a secret mission to destroy a mysterious superweapon designed by the evil Count Zarth Arn. The smugglers are soon recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to complete the mission, as well as to rescue the Emperor's son, who has gone missing.
When "Star Crash" appeared in the U.S., my local newspaper's film critic noted: "...You have to be suspicious of a movie that literally sneaks into town...". That remark left me curious, but not curious enough; after just one week "Star Crash" had left town as quietly as it had come in. Why would any movie get so little push from its' distributor, I wondered? Could it really be that bad? It took me years to find out. Some dozen or so years later, a friend of mine told me he had a copy...well, I couldn't pass this up. After seeing it, I decided that the critics were right--and wrong. Such a hoot! Caroline Munro definitely set the mood in her almost-not-there "space-kini" and high-heeled boots, with Marjoe Gortner pulling backup as 2nd banana. Cheesy special FX, a painfully earnest performance by Christopher Plummer (you can practically see him wondering if his paycheck will clear the bank when he's finished), and a surprisingly good score ( hey, it's John Barry, what did you expect?)make this a pleasant surprise, as long as you're not expecting anything on par with E.E. "Doc" Smith, etc. A small note: I got to meet Ms. Munro at an SF convention back in '82, and I totally agree with Harlan Ellison...she was so gorgeous in person that "they had to ugly her down, so that the cameras wouldn't melt during filming!"....Though I forgot to ask her if it was true that only copy of the shooting script had been stolen by members of Italy's Red Brigade terrorists and held for ransom! Ah, rumors...anyway, try and catch it for free and you won't feel cheated.

Destry: The Complete Series (1964 / John Gavin / 4 Disc DVD Set)

Destry, based on the popular westerns Destry Rides Again with James Stewart, and the Audie Murphy remake, Destry, premiered on February 14, 1964, with heart-throb John Gavin (Convoy, Psycho) taking the title role.
In the films, the main character was Tom Destry, a western lawman who was fast on the draw, but who preferred non-violent solutions in dealing with outlaws. In the television series, Gavin plays Tom s son Harrison, a lawman who had been framed and sent to prison. Upon his release, Destry roams the west searching for the men who framed him, but, like his father, his natural inclination was to avoid violence when he could, and Destry has a serio-comic element that makes it great fun to watch and Gavin s performance compares well with his predecessors , Stewart and Murphy.
Long thought to be lost forever, TMG and NBC Universal now bring you the complete series, all 13 episodes (over 10 hours) of Destry, re-mastered from original prints recently re-discovered in the Universal vaults, which is sure to please fans both old and new. Although lasting only one season, distinguished guest stars were featured each week, including Broderick Crawford, Don Hagerty and Claude Akins (The Solid Gold Girl), Lee Van Cleef and Barbara Stuart (Destry Had a Little Lamb), Una Merkel and Elisha Cook, Jr. (Law and Order Day), John Mitchum (Big Deal at Little River), Susan Oliver (One Hundred Bibles), and many more.
Includes a bonus feature: John Gavin Biography, a biography of John Gavin, the handsome star of television and movies, who went on to become not only President of the Screen Actors Guild, but Ambassador to Mexico during the presidency of Ronald Reagan!

Daughter of Darkness (1993) -- Daughter of Darkness is a tale of a young woman's sexual abuse by her father. The film is very dark as it offers plenty of sex, nudity, gore and heavy violence.Lily Chung-who played Ming-Ming in Billy Tang's "Red to Kill"(1994)-is extremely convincing as titular heroine Fong. The film is pretty uneven, because it's filled with lame comedy and silly jokes.Still the scenes of rape and sexual abuse are very shocking and unpleasant. The final slaughter scene is extremely violent and bloody.Anthony Wong from "Ebola Syndrome"(1996)is also memorable as police captain Lui.

Jigoku (1960)

A graduate-school student has a friend who is pure evil. His friend and he are out driving one night when they hit a drunkard and the friend leaves the accident victim to die. The student's life then goes downhill from there.
"Jigoku" is an utterly amazing Horror film, possibly the best one to come from Japan. The film has gained infamy for being the first all out gore flick. To be honest, its a bit less bloody than I expected. I really don't care about how graphic or not a film is however and I was completely impressed with this one. Even though I'm an agnostic, I've always found the concept of Hell to be horrifying (maybe its my Christian upbringing). Because of this, "Jigoku" was quite an unnerving experience. Its an incredibly surreal film, one of the few horror films I've seen with absolutely no standing in reality. The film's first half has been called slow-moving, but I feel its an interesting meditation on life and death. The second half is when it truly comes to life with the most memorable depiction of hell ever in the movies.

Part of the reason why the film works so well is the art direction and cinematography. "Jigoku" looks absolutely fantastic and is constantly dreamlike throughout. The direction by Nobuo Nakagawa is great also, as he knows the right moments to use a quick or slow pace. The screenplay is a bit ridiculous (why is it that the only two good and honest people in the film are the ones punished the most), but as with all nightmares it only seems illogical on reflection. The acting is campy to be sure but never distracting. "Jigoku" remains one of the greatest cult classics and a truly unique viewing experience. Kudos to Criterion for releasing another overlooked classic. (8/10)

Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973)

Frigga lives with her parents on their farm. Unable to speak after being horrifically raped by an elderly man when she was young, her parents spend the majority of their money on speech therapy classes for their daughter in the hope that one day, she will speak again. One day, Frigga misses the bus to get to her speech therapy class. She accepts a ride off a suave looking gentlemen named Tony who pulls up beside her. Once they are in town, he takes her for a meal. Afterwards, he takes Frigga back to what appears to be his bachelor pad. He gives her wine that has probably been drugged, as she passes out after drinking it. The man then takes no time in bringing a crooked doctor in to get her fixed on high class heroin. After announcing to Frigga that she is now dependent on heroin and cannot last more than 48 hours without it, she must work as a prostitute for him. Frigga, obviously not thrilled by this news, attempts escape twice, but to no avail. On getting her very first client, she ...

Play Motel (1979)

Very rare giallo and a wicked slice of Italian exploitation cinema. This is the xxx edition, presented in wide screen with English subtitles.
Eat your heart out, Norman Bates! Your uncanny motel only has a dead mother in the basement whereas, at Play Motel, there's kinky sex, severe blackmail and sadistic killing going on. This movie is a strange little outcast in the wonderful Italian sub genre of gialli. It honestly has a murder-story to tell, but it's more than obviously inferior to the incredibly large portions of rancid, gratuitous and semi-pornographic sex on display! Wealthy persons, mostly married but physically unsatisfied, gather here to make ALL their sexual fantasies come true. This includes dressing up like Satan and nuns, but also S&M and even intercourse with a bottle of champagne! However, these poor little perverts are unaware that the motel is also the home base of a blackmailing-network. Shortly after their visits, the guests receive incriminating photographical evidence of their little sleazy escapades and a demand to pay huge sums of money or else the pictures will be handed over to the media. When murder inevitable follows, the police (unorthodoxly, I may add) instructs a couple of actors to go undercover and infiltrate inside the dubious motel. This is an odd but strangely addictive movie, completely without suspense or surprises, yet extremely entertaining. The murder-plot and the killer's identity are the by far the most predictable I've ever seen, but you never seem to bother about this as the film introduces – oh yes – numerous gorgeous and naked women! The music, particularly the title song that can be heard whenever a couple checks into room number 4, is very catchy and fun. "Play Motel" is 100% pure and genuine TRASH, but a definite must for fans of Italian cult cinema.

FEMMINE CARNIVORE (1970)

Highly obscure West German / Italian
co production of a superb lost horror gem. Full screen presentation
with English subtitles

A woman checks into a health
spa-clinic secretly inhabited by cannibalistic and very sexy
feminists who enjoy killing and eating men. One gory and surreal
scene shows a body being dismembered and ground up by a sadistic
nurse. Is it part of the woman's nightmare or is it real? "Feminine
Carnivores" is worth checking out for its psychedelic atmosphere,
funky 70's fashion style and beautiful, often nude ladies. This is
perhaps the only movie I know of that has a group of women bra
burning and a man being split down the middle with a table saw. Not
to be missed, absolute gem of a horror movie.

ROTMANAD (1970)

One of the most difficult to find
films starring Christina Lindberg. This is Lindberg's 2nd feature
after 'Maid in Sweden'. Fully uncut in original Swedish language.
Presented wide screen.
A twisted tale about a VERY
dysfunctional Swedish family living on an idyllic lake. The
not-particularly-attractive mother is a prostitute who services the
men who show up in boats or hydroplanes out in the family
boathouse. The oafish father meanwhile serves drinks to his wife's
"guests". The wife seems to be trying to introduce the teenage
daughter (Lindberg) to the family business by letting her clients
photograph her naked or leer at her as she sunbathes topless. Then
the daughter falls in love with a boy her age, and the wife, her
plans evidently threatened, plots to get rid of the guy. This in
turn leads the daughter to take revenge, and the long-suffering
husband meanwhile has his own sinister plans. There are some ironic
twists, and by the end of the film the English title "Dog Days"
will make perfect sense as the family's dog becomes the most
significant remaining character.
I don't think this movie is supposed
to be a comedy, but it's hard to tell. It's a little serious for an
exploitation film, but also a little exploitative for a serious
film. One of Christina Lindberg's first films.

Berserk (1967 / Joan Crawford / DVD)

Joan Crawford stars as Monica Rivers, the owner of a traveling circus plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. When a high-wire performer becomes the first victim, he is replaced by Frank Hawkins (Ty Hardin), an even more daring aerialist. But Frank's attentions to Monica make her business manager, Dorando (Michael Gough), jealous. After Dorando becomes the brutal killer's next victim, Police Superintendent Brooks (Robert Hardy) arrives at the scene, but the mystery is not so easy to unravel with a cast of suspects with motives including jealousy and revenge.
This campy horror flick with a surprising climax also features Judy Geeson and Diana Dors.
