The Locals (2003)

“The Locals” would have worked best if sold as a Head Trip film, where what we think is reality is in fact not, and the point is to let the movie pull us along until it decides to send us reeling with its Big Reveal. And the film almost pulls it off, if not for the very poor technical craftsmanship, which really detracts from the script. It may seem petty to harp on the film’s nonexistent skill with lights, but consider this: the movie takes place almost entirely at night and on a lonely stretch of dirt road in the middle of nowhere. That’s prime fodder for an atmospheric and intense film where darkness is absolute. This is what “Dead End” did with tremendous success.
Two best friends Grant and Paul hit the road for a weekend of surfing, booze and hopefully . . . girls. With night falling they take a short cut and meet Lisa and Kelly, a couple of babes with a fast car, who invite them to a party. Based on true events, THE BLACK PANTHER is a very dark movie, that portrays its central character as neither a good OR bad guy. The fact that he has an army record, and collects millitary equipment, may shed some light on this guys anger.If he only planned his robberies as good as his hideouts and training, he may not have had to resort to kidnapping. As it is, his character can be likened to JON FINCHs performance in FRENZY, allbeit, a little crazier.

To believe that any effort to make a 'Jaws' sequel could compare with the impact of Steven Spielberg's original was a doomed notion even in 1978: the original was and is a cinematic classic of the highest order (despite having spent much of the '90s in almost-infinite rerun on the Turner networks), so much so that no sequel would ever have been able to measure up to its legacy. What happened basically is this: Universal execs saw the budget and schedule for 'Jaws' balloon so badly because of all its production troubles that they told Spielberg he'd never work in Hollywood again, UNTIL the movie was released and broke every box-office record imaginable. As they are wont to do in the face of staggering profit, these moneymongers quickly turned keel and told Spielberg they were behind him 100 percent the whole time and they wanted to know when he was planning to start shooting 'Jaws 2'. Spielberg, being smart, said 'No thanks', so the execs decided to go ahead with 'Jaws 2' without him. BIG mistake.

Brotherhood of Death (1976)

A group of black Vietnam vets go up against the Ku Klux Klan.
After antagonizing a Caucasian male, three black men: Raymond Moffat, Junior Moffat and Ned Tiese go on the run; join the army; fight Vietnamese; make dough selling dope; and return home to Kincaid County. They decide to assist oppressed citizens to be more assertive, and with the preacher's help, get them registered to vote. This does not auger well with minority Caucasians - who feel threatened, put on Ku Klux Klan hoods, amidst signs to 'Fight Communist and Intergration' and launch an all-out attack with impunity. Things get even more complicated when a black woman is sexually molested, a black male is blamed, and the Sheriff is shot dead, leaving corrupt lawmen and heavily armed Klansmen free to slay whoever dares to oppose them.

Call Girl (2007)

However, Madeira (Ivo Canelas) and Neves (Jose Raposo), PJ police detectives, discover the evidence of corruption and begin to investigate Meireles. Everything becomes even more complex when Madeira finds out that Maria, the passion of his life, is the bait that will force the politician to give way.

In my opinion this is one of the best movies made in Portugal. Even though I am not a movie expert, I believe that the comments made above by Rui Resende are a little bit too harsh. As a Portuguese citizen, he should know that - we rarely produce such good movies. If this script would be produced in Hollywood, it would certainly be a hit. So Thank you very much Mr. Vasconcelos.

Sexorcism Double Feature (2 Disc DVD)

From the vantage point of the 21st century, the 1970s seems like a wild and woolly time, a period when artists and entertainers took advantage of the strides made in the 1960s and created work that was ground-breaking… and in many cases uniquely bizarre. The two "adult" films included in the Sexorcism collection belong in the latter category — they’re gonzo creations that mix horror clichés with hardcore action, contain surprising plot twists, and boast the sort of tacky costumes and makeup that scream "Seventies!" They are also wildly sincere, meaning that even though the moviemakers worked for purely commercial reasons, they added perverse little grace notes to exercise their imaginations and, in the case of The Devil Inside Her, to indulge a dark taste for sex.

The directors of both pictures have acquired cults, in no small part because of the singular strangeness of their output. The director of Sacrilege (1971), Michel J. Rogers, may have coined the term "incredibly strange" that has been used to describe cult/camp favorites, but Zebedy Colt, the man who made The Devil Inside Her (1977), seems to have been an incredibly strange figure off-camera as well as on. Whatever the case may be, they both made adult cinema that was light years away from the deadeningly predictable fare churned out today.

Audition (1999)

For much of its running time, Audition doesn't even feel like a horror film. It starts almost like a gentle romantic comedy with a middle-aged widower named Aoyama (Tetsu Sawaki) goaded into agreeing with a film producer pal's scheme to find him a new wife by holding fake movie auditions. As things develop, their plan seems more and more dodgy but nothing can prepare them for the final outcome. Delicate ex-ballerina Asami (Eihi Shiina) seems the most likely candidate for Aoyama, but her references don't check out, and the audience is tipped off early by seeing her home life: alone in an empty apartment with a mysterious sack. A sack that occasionally groans and moves.
Made by the ridiculously prolific Takashi Miike (who also made a TV miniseries, two TV movies and three other feature films in the same year) it's a film best approached with little foreknowledge. It inspired lesser film-makers to make plenty of violent, empty gestures of movies. But Miike has a message within Asami's madness, without which the film wouldn't hit as hard as it does. The final minutes are as unbearable as film can get.

A curse hangs over Kaneto Shindo's primal Japanese classic like a looming storm cloud, but the supernatural has got nothing on the desperation and savagery of the human animal trying to survive the horrors of war. In 16th-century Japan, a hardened middle-aged woman and her young daughter-in-law have turned predator to survive, murdering the soldiers who wander into the sea of pampas grass surrounding their hut and selling their weapons for rice. When their war-deserter neighbor returns home and makes his moves on the young woman, their numb equilibrium is complicated by greed, jealousy, and lust. The consequences are terrible and not exactly surprising, but they are gripping. Shindo's unnerving close-ups, bobbing handheld camerawork, and soundtrack of pounding drums and howling flutes gives Onibaba a queasy intensity. Shooting in stark black and white, he makes even the waving of the grass look ominous as it all but swallows everyone who enters.

Adapted from traditional Japanese ghost stories, this lavish, widescreen production drew extensively on Kobayashi's own training as a student of painting and fine arts. Criterion is proud to present Kwaidan in a new ravishing color transfer.
A masterpiece of filmmaking artifice and mood-setting atmosphere, Kwaidan consists of four ghost stories adapted from the fiction of Greek-born Lafcadio Hearn (a.k.a. Yakumo Koizumi, 1850-1904), who assimilated into Japanese culture so thoroughly that his writings reveal no evidence of Western influence. So it is that these four cinematic interpretations--perhaps more accurately described as tales of spectral visitation--are sublimely Japanese in tone and texture, created entirely in a studio with frequently stunning results. There are painterly images here that remain the most beautiful and haunting in all of Japanese cinema, presented with the purity of silent film, sparsely accompanied by post-synchronized sounds and music (by Toru Takemitsu) that enhance the otherworldly effect of director Masaki Kobayashi's meticulous imagery. When viewed in a receptive frame of mind, Kwaidan can be intensely hypnotic.
Each of the four stories find their protagonists confronted by spirits that compel them to (respectively) make amends for past mistakes, maintain vows of silence, satisfy the yearnings of the undead, or capture phantoms that remain frightfully elusive. As each tale progresses, their supernatural elements grow increasingly intense and distant from the confines of reality. With careful use of glorious color and wide-screen composition, Kwaidan exists in a netherworld that is both real and imagined, its characters never quite sure they can trust what they've seen and heard. Naked Comes The Huntress (1978)

Three friends (Chen Sing, James Tien & Wong Ching) turn up in Manchuria to find fortunes and prosperity of some kind. Almost devoured by the perils of the land, the trio stumble upon a young, naked girl in the snowy landscape. She is Mien Mien (Lee Ying-Ying) who is actually using her still, naked body to attract the minks that she and her father hunt for a living. The trio of men are subsequently invited to her home where they work for the family in exchange for food and shelter. Soon the alluring nature of Mien Mien gets the lust in Wong Ching's character going but Mien Mien is saved by Chen Sing, the elder of the trio. Love is in the air but not in the eyes of the father who wants to marry the daughter to the younger James Tien character. Deception and betrayal soon enter...
A slightly bizarre, and all the more entertaining for it, film, more of a drama / thriller, than a martial arts film, although there are a couple of nicely (sammo hung) choreographed sequences. The film moves at a quick pace and has several twists and turns which work really well, keeping you on your toes. The use of the rural location, mainly in winter, works really well and adds something else to the ambience of the film's first act. Oh, and carrie lee is kinda cute...

THREE DAYS OF A BLIND GIRL (1993)

Amazing sleazy psycho exploitation thriller! This one woman goes blind but the blindness will only last for 3 days. When her husband (a rich doctor) is going somewhere away for work, Anthony Wong (greatest Hong Kong actor ever) comes in to trap and terrorize her in her own home. Wong seemed like a friend just visiting at first but slowly we discover how messed up in the head he was and why he's doing this (there's actually a very fascinating story behind everything and you question who the bad guy truly is in the grand scheme of things). The girl's blindness makes her easy to torture and hold captive so Wong's insanity is even more threatening, lots of surprises and twists you'll have never seen coming.

The Killer Snakes (1975)

A young man who has been beaten, abused, humiliated and laughed at all his life finds that he has an unusual empathy with snakes. He can talk to them and they understand him, and eventually he finds that he can get them to do his bidding. He decides to use his newfound friends to take his revenge on everyone who ever did him wrong.
Now this is what I like, a very very well made Shaw Brothers movie, that pulls all the stops out in this sub-genre of snake horror/thriller movies. This is by far the best deadly snake movie I have ever seen. The plot, "A young man who has been beaten, abused, humiliated and laughed at all his life finds that he has an unusual empathy with snakes. He can talk to them and they understand him, and eventually he finds that he can get them to do his bidding. He decides to use his newfound friends to take his revenge on everyone who ever did him wrong." The young man is not a hero at all, in fact, he's probably worse than the people he takes revenge on. Very well made horror movie, with some great nudity to say the least, and plenty of sex and violence. When there is no snake attacks going on, which are great, there is usually a naked girl or two, so there is no way you can go wrong with this one. Yes, this is extreme Asian cinema, and I love it. The whole movie is sleazy as hell, but done with a huge amount of quality film-making. I highly recommend this movie to fans of Asian cinema especially, and to all horror fans. It's a dandy to say the least.

Raw Force (1982)

A group of martial arts students are en route to an island that supposedly is home to the ghosts of martial artists who have lost their honor. A Hitler lookalike and his gang are running a female slavery operation on the island as well. Soon, the two groups meet and all sorts of crazy things happen which include cannibal monks, piranhas, zombies, and more!
"Raw Force" is like an ultra-sleazy and perverted version of Love Boat, with additional Kung Fu fights, demented cannibalistic monks, white slaves trade, energetic zombies and a whole lot of lousy acting performances. No wonder this movie was included in the recently released "Grindhouse Experience 20 movie box-set". It's got everything exploitation fanatics are looking for, blend in a totally incoherent and seemingly improvised script! The production values are extremely poor and the technical aspects are pathetic, but the amounts of gratuitous violence & sex can hardly be described. The film opens at a tropically sunny location called Warriors Island, where a troop of sneering monks raise the dead for no apparent reason other than to turn them into Kung Fu fighters. Massacre Mafia Style (1978)

For longtime fans of Grindhouse cinema, the trailer for Duke Mitchell's Massacre Mafia Style is a real beloved treasure. Speaking personally, I can say that ever since I first saw it, it's been one of my all time favorites. One thing I always wanted to know after seeing it was whether the actual film lived up to the trailers iconic outrageousness. Well, after viewing the film now for the first time (thanks to a friend sending me a DVD-R copy of it), I am very happy to say that Massacre Mafia Style (aka The Executioner) is a really solid, entertaining, emotional low-budget mafia film.
The main man behind it all was Duke Mitchell, who film geeks may know from movies like Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla (1952), which he co-starred in with his then comedy partner Sammy Petrillo. Mitchell and Petrillo were actually an act that was a direct rip-off of Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis. Mitchell was the suave Dean Martin clone and Sammy Petrillo was the boy-monkey Lewis wannabe. They were later sued as a result. In the late 1970s, Mitchell produced, wrote and directed two mafia genre films, Massacre Mafia Style and Gone With The Pope which was never completed before Mitchell's death in 1981, but thanks to the folks at Grindhouse Releasing, the film hopefully will be seeing the light of day on DVD in the near future.

Color Me Blood Red (1965)

And the Bronze medal goes to... Color Me Blood Red, the third goriest, third most entertaining, and, the third installment of the legendary, Blood Trilogy. Sure, it wasn't as groundbreaking or gory as Blood Feast, or as flat-out entertaining as Two Thousand Maniacs, plus, the presence of a Thomas Wood and/or a Connie Mason might have helped a little, but I still consider the unwanted step-sibling of the Blood Trilogy to be a bit underrated. Color Me Blood Red has pleasant Sarasota beach locations, and not to mention, Adam Sorg is a lot more convincing as a killer than Fuad Ramses, or any single one of the 2000 Maniacs. just A hell of an actor, although, that's not what we're after. Color Me Blood Red also stars several attractive women, some of which not nearly as young as the roles suggests, this film just didn't seem to try all that hard to entertain us, not quite as ambitious as the first two. The so-called humor would seemingly fit more in something from a decade earlier, if ever. F stands for Farnsworth wasn't any funnier the second time Sorg said it, and Holy Banana's just doesn't express the horror and confusion one would feel after finding a girls leg.
