The Vampire (1957)

The Vampire is a black and white 1957 horror film, produced by Arthur Gardner and Jules V. Levy, and directed by Paul Landres. Like 1956's The Werewolf, it offered a science fiction take on a traditionally supernatural creature, although the films were produced by different production companies.
The late Dr. Campbell was experimenting with vampire bat blood just before his death. Fellow doctor Beecher finds a bottle of pills among Dr. Campbell's effects and takes them home. Dr. Beecher's daughter accidentally substitutes the vampire blood pills for her father's migraine tablets. As a result, the kindly Dr. Beecher starts having blackouts from the pills, making him change into a bloodthirsty monster by night.
Dr. Matthew Campbell has been experimenting on methods to regress the mind to primitive instincts so that we can find methods to improve our brains and not get taken in by cheap horror movie hogwash. He's developed a drug made from vampire bat blood and has begun treating himself with it. But instead of improving his mind, he's become ill and addicted. He dies, but not before trying to warn fellow doctor Paul Beecher. Fortunately for us, he dies before he can say more than that pills are to blame. While still at Campbell's house, Paul finds a bottle of pills and pockets them. He's also got another bottle of pills in his other pocket that he takes for frequent migraine attacks. He goes home, puts his jacket on a rack, and then he's struck with a migraine. He asks his daughter to give him the pills in his jacket pocket, and of course she gives him the pills of evil. He is instantly addicted and he must take one pill every day. Each time he takes a pill he turns into a hairy and very ...

A cool zombie flick, with a decent cast, gruesome special effects, good atmosphere...worth watching! Not in the same league as, say, "The beyond" or "zombies", but it's decent entertainment anyways!

But in order to get into the mind of this maniac, Graham must face another: Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox, X2, RED), the imprisoned psychiatrist whose own insanity almost cost Graham his life… and whose insights into the 'Tooth Fairy' could prove as dangerous as the killer himself.

Tom Noonan (Heat, Robocop 2), Joan Allen (The Bourne Legacy), Dennis Farina (Get Shorty), Kim Greist (Brazil) and Stephen Lang (Avatar) co-star in this gripping thriller from director Michael Mann (Heat, Miami Vice) and adapted from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. All Night Long / Tapestry Of Passion [DVD]

Written and directed by Alan Colberg and shot in 35mm in the mid-1970s, these two films have been expertly transferred to DVD by Vinegar Syndrome and provide a great opportunity to view a number of leading male and female adult film stars of the period, including the "legendary" John Holmes, the real-life inspiration for the Dirk Diggler character played by Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights (1997).

In All Night Long Holmes and Rick Lutze are challenged to complete a series of sexual encounters (including a little bit of everything, incidentally) in order to win a prize from a local society supposedly dedicated to male satisfaction. However, as the story progresses, one begins to notice that the most enthusiastic members of the society are female and that the female sexual partners control each man's progress through the night. Interestingly, both Boogie Nights and All Night Long currently enjoy a 7.9 user rating among IMDb members, which puts All Night Long up there with Hans Billian's Sensational Janine (7.8 rating) as one of the most highly rated adult films of the Classic era.

Tapestry of Passion, in which Holmes plays private investigator Johnny Wadd, has a less compelling story line and scores a mere 6.0 among IMDb members. However, it is nicely shot with lovely, natural actresses and is infused with the same campy outlook as All Night Long, which makes this double feature thoroughly enjoyable for adult couples of any age.

ALL NIGHT LONG (1975):
The world's greatest lovers, John Holmes and Rick Lutze, embark on a lusty competition to see who can bed the greatest number of women over the course of a night...
TAPESTRY OF PASSION (1976):
Private detective Johnny Wadd is hot on the case of a mysterious and beautiful woman known as 'The Black Widow' whose lovers have an unfortunate habit of dying... Featuring Annette Haven and Leslie Bovee!

Bonus Features:
1. Scanned in 2k from 35mm original negatives
2. Original theatrical trailers for both titles

Harlot / Tijuana Blue [DVD]

Following the unprecedented success of his 1970 film Mona, director Howard Ziehm quickly established himself as a one-man filmmaking machine, directing dozens of boundary pushing films. Presented here are two of his most unique and important early works.

HARLOT:
Mary and Melody are best friends, though Melody is uncomfortable around Mary's sexual openness. After finally being coaxed into sexual experimentation, Melody begins to discover her erotic self and indulges in a series of sexual adventures, each wilder than the last. HARLOT is an avant-garde influenced, anti-establishment oddity, presented fully uncut for the first time on DVD.
1970 / 64 min / Color / 1.33:1

TIJUANA BLUE:
After discovering that his girlfriend is pregnant, a man named Jamie agrees to assist on a drug run from Tijuana back to LA so that he can raise the money necessary for an abortion. However upon his arrival in Mexico, he soon discovers that there may be more to the operation than drugs...
1971 / 92 min / Color / 1.33:1

Bonus Features:
1. New 2k scan and restoration from 16mm vault elements
2. Commentary for Harlot by director Howard Ziehm

Fall Of The Eagles

This movie contains some scenes from Convoi de Filles (1978), which was itself full of stock footage. The train and fight scenes in the middle part are taken from Alain Payets exploitationers Train Spécial Pour SS (1977) and Nathalie Rescapée De L’Enfer (1978). Don’t be fooled by the screens, this is neither exploitation nor war action.

Berlin, 1939. Lily is a young, pretty girl with a wonderful voice, the daughter of wealthy banker Walter Strauss. A brilliant officer falls in love with her. However, she prefers him Charles — musician and composer living contrary to the laws of the Third Reich.

Black Torment

Sir Richard and his second wife hear of 18th-century evil done by someone who looks like Sir Richard.
BLACK TORMENT was a movie I read about in books on British horror films but it was one which I had never seen until I was recently able to rent it locally. I was so impressed that I went out and bought it. It's not a classic but it is very well done. BLACK TORMENT was made in 1964 by a small production called Compton headed up by Tony Tenser who would eventually start one of Hammer's main competitors Tigon Films (makers of WITCHFINDER GENERAL, BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW) later in the decade. Compton produced some interesting films in the mid-1960s including Roman Polanski's REPULSION, The Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper thriller A STUDY IN TERROR and George Harrison's WONDERWALL. BLACK TORMENT was obviously an attempt to cash in on the success of Hammer Films and the film turns out to be not such much a horror film as a Gothic one like those being produced in Italy with Barbara Steele (CASTLE OF BLOOD, NIGHTMARE CASTLE) although not as gruesome. In fact it was of the few true English Gothic movies that I've seen as it comes straight out of the tradition of Ann Radcliffe and Horace Walpole.

The plot is standard Gothic stuff. An 18th century nobleman returns to his family estate only to be told that he's been there before and committed murder. He begins to see the ghost of his first wife and starts to doubt his own sanity. Meanwhile more murders are occuring. If you're a fan of Gothic literature you'll have a pretty good idea of how this all turns out but I won't spoil it for you. The film is beautifully shot which comes as no surprise since the cameraman is Peter Newbrook who would later direct the atmospheric Victorian shocker THE ASPHYX. The real surprise is that the director is Robert Hartford-Davis who would go on to make CORRUPTION and BLOODSUCKERS (INCENSE FOR THE DAMNED) two very different films in terms of style and content. All were photographed by Newbrook so there is that connecting thread. Although there are no major genre stars, the costumes are appropriate, the settings atmospheric (inside and out), and the music is effective. A good, old-fashioned Gothic thriller that really entertains if you're into this sort of thing. This Redemption DVD of BLACK TORMENT looks very good but I'm sure there's a better print out there somewhere.

Black Venus

A black chick named Venus (Josephine Jacqueline Jones who also played in Warrior Queen) provides the inspiration for a down and out sculptor to create a statue of her likeness. They fall in love but he gets all belligerent on her when she starts bringing home the bread and paying the rent while he's doing his starving artist thing. So Venus goes out and becomes a total slut.First thing she does is become a "companion" to a rich old MILF who likes to buy her stuff and fuck her.Venus gets pissed though when her hubby comes home and wants her to become his plaything too, so she splits. She ends up being a high class hooker who gets sold outright to some rich art critic who has a grudge against her ex-boyfriend.To really piss him off, he also steals the statue of Venus too.In the end, the drunken artist comes barging in to the critic's house with a loaded gun to get Venus back. But which one does he want more; the flesh and blood Venus, or the statue?
