Dragons Forever (1988)

Dragons Forever (Chinese: 飛龍猛將) is a 1988 Hong Kong martial arts action-comedy film directed by Sammo Hung, who also starred in the film and co-directed by Corey Yuen. The film co-stars Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Deannie Yip, Pauline Yeung, and Crystal Kwok. It is the last film in which Hung, Chan and Biao all appeared in together, as later Chan subsequently focused on his solo film career.

A fishery is seeking court action against a local chemical factory for polluting the water. The mysterious chemical company hires lawyer Jackie Lung (Jackie Chan) to find information that will discredit the fishery. He employs his arms dealer friend, Wong (Sammo Hung) to woo the fishery owner, Miss Yip (Deannie Yip), to try to convince her to settle out of court.

Lung also brings in goofy inventor and professional criminal, Tung (Yuen Biao), to bug her apartment. Unfortunately, Wong and Tung are unaware of each other's roles and soon come into confrontation, while Lung tries to maintain the peace.

Wong falls for Miss Yip, whilst Lung woos her cousin, Miss Wen (Pauline Yeung), an environmental scientist who is going to testify on Miss Yip's behalf. The three men inadvertently discover that the chemical company is just a facade for a narcotics empire, ran by Hua Hsien-Wu (Yuen Wah). They soon come up against Hua's thugs, and ultimately infiltrate the factory for a showdown with Hua himself and his henchman - martial arts master (Benny Urquidez).

D'Wild Wild Weng (1982)

Weng Weng was christened as Ernesto de la Cruz and was the youngest of the five de la Cruz children (all boys). Weng Weng was born with a medical condition known as primordial dwarfism, which caused him to only grow to a height of 2 feet and 9 inches tall. According to his brother Celing de la Cruz, when his mother gave birth to Weng-Weng, his size was "no bigger than a small coke bottle", this forced Weng Weng's parents to place him in the care of the hospital incubator for the first twelve months of his life. During this time, the doctors were advising the de la Cruz couple that Weng Weng might not survive but miraculously he did, and being devoted Catholics, the couple showed their devotion to their faith by dressing and parading a young Weng Weng as Santo Niño each year for the annual Baclaran parade.

Weng Weng starred in this 1982 western D'Wild Wild Weng, playing a character called "Mr. Weng". In the film, he and sidekick Gordon (Max ZUMA Laurel) are sent to the countryside to investigate the murder of Santa Monica's mayor. The town is now overrun by the corrupt governor Sebastian (played by Romy Diaz) and his army of banditos, all dressed up to look like Mexican revolutionaries. The ending has Weng cranking a Gatling gun - on the back of a jeep - mowing down wave after wave of sombreros, while a tribe of dwarf Indians launch a counterattack with bows and arrows.

Count Tsakona and His Draculettes (1989)

In this offering, Kostas Tsakonas (a champion of the SOV comedy of the era) as a wimpy poor guy & petty thief who lives with his nephew, is chosen by the arch-Dracula to rule Greece, since he's a long lost relative of the vampire family, and since the current Prime Minister has sucked the Greeks dry (yes, there's some awful not-so-subtle dated attempts at political satire in there as well). What follows is Tsakona's transformation and consequent attempts to adjust to his new vampiric lifestyle, while a clumsy exorcist and some of his fellow villagers are after him.

The title says it all really, this is a fine example from the glory days of the Greek SOV 'industry' of the 80's. Today this all looks horribly silly, badly written, cheaply produced and directed trash, but back then this was wholesome family home entertainment for the weekend.

Skullduggery (1983)

A nerdy fellow that enjoys playing a Dungeons and Dragons-like role playing game goes on a killing spree as the result of a family curse.

Wow. What the hell did I just watch? That is all I can think after watching Skullduggery.  I have heard a lot of bad things about this movie over the years but never bothered to watch it until recently and almost immediately regretted my decision. It was just as bad (if not worse) as everyone said that it was and I think that I might have lost some IQ points-not that I had a lot to begin with-after watching it. I knew that I was in trouble after the movie opened with a weird, Scooby-Doo-like theme song (that I will never, ever be able to get out of my head no matter how hard I try) and things just got even worse from there.  Make no bones about it this movie is bad. Not in a “so bad it’s good” way but just in a “wow, this film is very, very bad and it just plain sucks” sort of way. It’s boring, goofy, confusing at times and just all around a terrible movie in every possible way.

I’ll admit that it sounded like it could be interesting but after the horrible opening scene (that takes place in the 1300’s) I just got a bad feeling that I was in for something quite painful and I was right. After this horrid opening we are transported through time to 1982 and meet our main character Adam (who is pretty talented at just walking around looking confused or angry and being a dick to his friends and others in general). We get to watch him do amazing things like play a role playing game, argue with his dorky friends, and then attend a really lame talent show (don’t know why it was called a talent show since no one seemed to have any actual talent) where a goofball magician (that sort of reminded me of the short-lived WWF wrestler Phantasio that made one whopping appearance in the ring back in the day) awakens the curse inside him and makes him a killer.

Alive or Preferably Dead/ Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Wild East Productions presents another double feature highlighting specific Euro actors this time involving actor Giuliano Gemma aka Montgomery Wood and we also have a double dose of Director Duccio Tessari who together with Gemma gave fans the two Ringo films at the beginning of the Spaghetti Western genre. This time Gemma is presented by two light hearted farces which can only be appreciated if you have an acquired taste for Italian humor. Up first is 'ALIVE OR PREFERABLY DEAD'-1969 which is not a true Spaghetti Western and emerges as a period piece at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, in fact, the first ten minutes makes you feel like you are in a Victorian gaslight drama. It pairs Gemma with professional boxer of his time Nino Benvenuti as two brothers who stand to gain an inheritance if they can exist together for three months without bickering. Naturally, the usual brawls ensue and they decide to take up bank robbing? to become the most notorious bandits in the territory. The scene stealer is actress Sydne Rome who both brothers fall for. The camera work by Manuel Rojas and music score by Gianni Ferrio try to enhance the mood but the low brow schtick overplays its welcome. The same schtick is peppered all over the next entry 'KISS KISS BANG

Harlot / Tijuana Blue [DVD]

Following the unprecedented success of his 1970 film Mona, director Howard Ziehm quickly established himself as a one-man filmmaking machine, directing dozens of boundary pushing films. Presented here are two of his most unique and important early works.

HARLOT is an avant-garde influenced, anti-establishment oddity, presented fully uncut for the first time on DVD.

Public Cowboy No. 1

Rustlers using modern technology (airplanes, shortwave radios, refrigerated trucks) are Gene's target.
Deputy Gene Autry rides to the rescue when modern rustlers use airplanes, short wave radios, and refrigerator trucks to ply their trade. Cowboys and 1937 technology result in an ersatz era that only exists in Hollywood fiction. Occasional chuckles are a side effect. The leading citizens consider Gene's friend and mentor, old Sheriff Doniphan, outdated. They hire a team of modern detectives. Hot on the trail, the detectives' car is stuck in a stream, and their teargas grenades explode accidentally. Gene and his cowboy pals ride through a teargas fog to bypass this obstacle in pursuit of the crooks. Surrealism abounds. Gene does a fair amount of singing, but lengthy musical numbers are thankfully absent. As comic sidekicks go, Smiley Burnette leaves one yearning for Gabby Hayes. The story includes cliff-hanging action and light humor. The outbursts of violence are bloodless enough to be "G" rated. B movie meister, Joseph Kane, directed this little flick. Nobody made Westerns like Republic. Great Saturday matinee fun. ;-)

Nympho Cycler (1971)

A beautiful, love starved woman named Misty, leaves an abusive relationship with an odd man. She joins a pack of bikers and many sexual escapades and intense happenings occur on her adventure into a new freedom.

Misty (Casey Larrain) is tired of her cross-dressing husband (Edward D. Wood, Jr.) forcing her to have sex with his friends so she jumps on her motorcycle and heads across the country where she finds other people she can have sex with.

NYMPHO CYCLER would have been long forgotten had it not been written and directed by the cult figure Edward D. Wood, Jr.. Fans of his are pretty much going to want to watch this thing at least once but there's no question that it's quality is among the worst thing that the director ever did. Yes, I'm being incredibly kind by giving this thing a two-star rating and I have no problem stating that if you're not a fan of Wood then you might as well take away both stars and give this thing a BOMB rating. Fans of sexploitation, porn or just movies in general aren't going to find too much here to enjoy.

The Comedy of Terrors / The Raven (Midnite Movies Double Feature)

Vincent Price and Peter Lorre star in a chilling double feature. Business is booming at a funeral parlor that employs a murderous undertaker in Comedy of Terrors (Basil Rathbone. 1964/84 min.), and three powerful magicians engage in a battle for supremacy in The Raven (Boris Karloff. 1963/86 min.). Color/NR.
I love Vincent Price and Peter Lorre, not to mention Poe, so I was certainly looking forward to watching these.

The first movie is The Comedy of Terrors and it really is quite funny. Since you've read the plot a million times on these reviews, I'll cut to the chase. Vincent Price and Peter Lorre try to drum up more business for a funeral home through murder, hence more customers.
Vincent Price is laugh out loud funny, and really does have a talent for comedy, as does Peter Lorre. The facial expressions of Price are fantastic, as they were in Tales of Terror and it's an enjoyable film to watch. Watch for the actress called "Beverly Hills" in this one. (You'll recognize her by her, uh, name.) On a last note with this movie, Joyce Jameson, sexy as always, plays the wife of Vincent Price in this, and it's just so nice to watch a film where you know that all the women involved have natural figures from the waist up. No guessing here. This era has passed.

Death Becomes Her (Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

Directed by the amazing Robert Zemeckis, "Death Becomes Her" features a clever script, an awesome cast, and mind-blowing special effects that most Hollywood films lack nowadays. The film centers on the eternal quest for beauty and youth by an aging Hollywood starlet, Madeline Ashton, (played by the brillant Meryl Streep). Her high school rival, Helen, (Goldie Hawn), brings her latest beau to meet Ashton after a campy performance in a musical based on "Sweet Bird of Youth" (get the theme already?).
When Madeline runs off with Helen's fiance (Bruce Willis) Helen falls into a demented state and becomes obese and determined to get even with Madeline. After discovering a secret potion sold by a Hollywood witch (Isabella Rosellini) both Helen, and later Madeline regain their youth, vitality, and beauty. However, all this comes with strings involving immortality.
The wonderful script pokes fun at many stereotypes, rumors, and realities Hollywood is well-known for. From plastic surgery to the fact that no one has never met a neighbor in Los Angeles, the script is intelligent scriptwriting at its' best. The special effects by Industrial Light and Magic which has Helen walking with a hole through her midsection, and Madeline walking with a twisted neck are incredible to watch. One thing I adored about this film was the wicked, dark, and diabolical score by Alan Silvestri that incorporates harps and vengeful theme throughout the film.
The film's ending featuring a legion of Hollywood's undead (including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and James Dean)is hysterical and even the names of the two main characters, Madeline ("Mad" as in crazy) and Helen ("Hell" as in hellish) is genius. Personally along with "She-Devil," "Heathers," and "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills," this film ranks as one of the best black comedies to come out in recent years. A must-see for everyone!

Double Feature (Zapped! / Making the Grade)

Disc 1: Making the Grade WS
Lazy preppie Palmer Woodrow hires street-smart Eddie Keaton to go to school for him while he lives it up in Europe. Eddie falls in love with preppie gal Tracey, upsetting Biff, the Hoover Academy bully. When his bookie from the old neighborhood, Dice, comes to collect on Eddie's gambling debts and Palmer returns early from Europe, the the scheme slowly starts to unravel. Soon, Eddie can't even tell whose side he's really on.
Very funny movie, very entertaining characters. Palmer was the top dog, every scene he was in, every line he had, was HILARIOUS!!! Some great early work by the Diceman. His imitation of John Travolta was great! The Coach was very funny too; best scenes were when he stumbles into the X-rated movie, and when he comes home with the hookers. Gordon Jump (Big Guy from WKRP) was his usual bumbling, funny self. During the final credits, they say Palmer and Eddie will be back in "Tourista"; unfortunately for us they never made it. Big mistake, Tourista would have been great!

For Y'ur Height Only (1981)

Mr. Giant has kidnapped the brilliant Dr. Van Kohler and is planning to use the Doctor's invention, the N-bomb, to hold the world hostage. The only one who can foil Mr. Giant's evil scheme is Agent 00, a 3-foot-tall filipino martial arts master, expert marksman, top-class romancer and all-around superspy. Can Agent 00 rescue Dr. Kohler before it's too late?
This is easily one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Weng Weng is agent 00, and he's two foot 9". From the opening "montage" of him running around looking cool to the extreme shocker/twist ending, this film had me roaring with laughter and cheering on Weng Weng as he battles the Crime Syndicate and Mr. Giant. There are endless scenes of Weng Weng looking around and then sneaking up on people and then killing them. And he's ruthless. He laughs and smiles after killing bad guys. The bad guys are great, too. "All forces of good are our sworn enemies," one says at one point. There is something about this movie, and I can't really put my finger on it, but its really a magical film. One that should be enjoyed by all.

The Joys of Jezebel / My Tale Is Hot (DVD)

Dead for a week, bad girl Jezebel can't enjoy the pleasures of Hell until she first gets revenge on the man who killed her. So she makes a deal with The Devil: he'll let her return topside providing she finds a soul to replace hers. In fact, Lucifer suggests the soul of Rachel (Dixie Donovan), a buxom airhead who happens to be a virgin. Presto-change-o, Jezebel and Rachel swap bodies resulting in Rachel acting like a slut above while Jezebel behaves bashfully below... Full of writhing bodies and sinning souls, THE JOYS OF JEZABEL is a witty sex fantasy from the creative team of David F. Friedman (The Erotic Adventures of Zorro) and Peter Perry (The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill). And, hey, who knew Hell was so psychedelic?

Plus: Things are so slow in Hell that Lucifer's wife goads him into drumming up business, starting with Mr. Ben Hur. Since Ben has just been named "World's Most Faithful Husband," The Devil attempts to corrupt him with a bevy of naked lovelies. But nope, not only can't the little guy be tempted, but he's got his own surprise for Satan... At War with the Army (1950)

I love this movie for countless reasons. There's a lot of cross appeal for so many collectors; WWII war time, Rat Pack, comedy, family friendly, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, American Standards music and dancing, black & white film, Polly Bergen, etc. It really should be a staple in any movie buffs collection.
Anybody that is critical of the Martin & Lewis schtick of pratfalls, slapstick, camp, jokes & gags, straight man -vs- monkey, just doesn't get it. Dean sings and Jerry goes nuts. It's Martin & Lewis! And this movie is truly a comedy classic. When originally released, it was a box office smash. "At War With the Army" was M&L's first starring vehicle. It's correct that they previously appeared in "My Friend Irma" and "My Friend Irma Goes West", but in supporting roles. It was "At War With The Army" that established Martin & Lewis as box office mega-stars and for the next 6 years they ruled the Paramount lot.
I've seen this movie at least 10 times, and now with this Film Chest restored version I'll be watching it for years to come.

Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. (1990)

If you like Troma's kind of silly, off beat, absurd humor then I'm quite sure you'll really enjoy a whole lot of scenes in this flick as well. There are lots of cartoonish, hilarious characters all of which have been acted out with confidence and conviction.
The story... well there's this American cop in NY who finds out he can get supernatural powers by changing into the Kabukiman, a kind of Japanese Samurai dude with lots of makeup. Our hero uses his new found powers to beat the crap out of some local small time crooks in various entertaining ways, but it turns out he really owns his powers to the fact that he was chosen to fight the Evil One, who is about to take over the world. He is reluctant to accept this responsibility at first, but a Japanese chick kicks some sense into him and then goes on to teach him how to use his new found skills properly.

Blood on My Shoes (1983)

Agents across the globe take turns spying on and double-crossing one another in an attempt to locate a valuable formula encrypted in the music code.
An obscure Franco, apparently loosely based on Edgar Wallace's story 'Sanders of the River.', little-seen shoestring comedy/action/spy/thriller. A quintessential cast, Vernon goes characteristically and  gloriously over the top as the murdered - or is he? - missile inventor in full Mad Scientist key. Lina charms as a cabaret singer...or is she a spy? Or is she both? And Mayans is the most laid-back, unflappable tough guy you'll ever see.
Music plays a prominent role, in different ways...beyond the typically-awesome minimal jazz soundtrack (credited to Pablo Villa...aka Daniel White, a regular Franco collaborator...though some sources credit the music here to Franco himself).

Premutos: The Fallen Angel (1997)

Premutos is the first of the fallen Angels, even before Lucifer. His Goal is to rule the world, the living and the dead. His son should pave the way for him and appears arbitrary throughout human history and is then recognized as some kind of monster. In the present time, a young man living in Germany begins to suffer from visionary flashbacks - of the lives he lived in the past as Premutos' son! He remembers how he appeared in the middle age, when mankind suffered from pestilence and during WWII in Russia. On his (earthly) father's birthday, a case containing some strange old book and a yellow potion is found in their garden, which was hidden by some peasant in 1943, who experimented with witchery in order to re-animate his deceased wife. Whe the young man gets in touch with the book and some of the yellow potion, he mutates into a monster and awakens an army of zombies, ready to bring back the fallen Angel Premutos and to disturb the little birthday party...

There is an incredible amount of blood and gore, this film easily ranks up with Peter Jackson's "Braindead". The 30 minute climax is amazing-non stop gore and slaughter. We have a glorious kill count of 139 here and they are seemingly all shown. There is also pretty nice sex scene added for a good measure. Highly recommended.
