Deadlier Than the Male (1967)

British agent Bulldog Drummond is assigned to stop a master criminal who uses beautiful women to do his killings.
Classy production, solid plot, witty dialog, believable characters. When watching this film, one does not say, "Oh yeah, a 60's Bond take-off", as one does when watching perhaps "Our Man Flint" or "In Like Flint". Richard Johnson's Hugh Drummond is smooth, handsome and resourceful without being obnoxious or larger than life. Steve Carlson's Robert Drummond provides youthful energy without becoming a foil. Elke Sommer's Irma Eckman is irresistably gorgeous, intelligent, eloquent, and cold-as-ice deadly. Sylva Kocina's Penelope is kittenish, sensual and apologetic...even as she's torturing or killing a man. Nigel Green is a ruthless, cunning business man who has figured out how to get rivals out of his way; Kill them. The murders are clever, sexy and brutal but not campy.

Saffo – Venere di Lesbo

Year: 1960
Duration: 01:29:31
Directed by: Pietro Francisci
Actors: Kerwin Mathews, Tina Louise, Riccardo Garrone
Language: English
Country: Italy | France
Also known as: The Warrior Empress, Det blodige sværd
Description: The VII century B.C. the Poet Sappho leads the rebellion against the corrupt government of the island of Lesbos. She helps a young Phaon.
Review: As part of the Sword & Sorcery Project, here is the English dubbed version of Pietro Francisci's Saffo, venere di Lesbo. Top-heavy with wild action scenes and female pulchritude, this Italo/French costume adventure is set in the 7th century B.C. on the island of Lesbos, where the immortal poetess Sappho (Tina Louise) is leading a revolt against the corrupt government of Mytilene led by despotic ruler Melanchrus (Enrico Maria Salerno). Aiding her in overthrowing the yoke of tyranny is the handsome Phaon (Kerwin Mathews). For some reason it is the temple of Aphrodite that is the focus of attention in this supposed battle for the rights of the ordinary people, and not the temple of Mars. Sappho's sexual orientation is a moot point though....

Maciste in Hell (1962)

Maciste travels to Hell to find a witch and make her undo a curse she put on the surface world. Engaging cross between witch-burning horror and heroic peplum sees Maciste, the film's muscle-bound, loincloth-clad hero, uprooting a tree and travelling into the depths of hell to lift a witch's curse and save an innocent woman's life. Along the way he has to battle various foes such as lions, eagles, giants, snakes, you name it. This is a thoroughly entertaining slice of escapism packed with action and cool special effects.

THE ARENA (1973) is a cult classic film from director Joe D'Amato and stars Pam Grier.

The Vengeance of She (1968)

A beautiful young European girl, Carol, is taken over by the spirit of mysterious Ayesha, queen of the lost city of Kuma. Carol is taken to Kuma to succeed the almost-immortal Ayesha as empress of Kuma.
I think this is a worthy sequel to the Cushing "She".

Olga Schoberová hasn't much to say but did not need to be dubbed as she can at least string a sentence together. (Unlike Ursula.)

The story follows up where She left off but that is not obvious until half way through the film. If you are looking for a modern day formulae (obligatory love scene with 20 seconds of bare breasts, three way love triangle with lovers screaming at each other, etc. etc,) you will not find it. Just a good story with a host of good actors – no all became famous.

The opening sequence has a terrific theme tune and has Olga wandering down a lonely road. We never find out who she is or where she comes from or how she manages to be immaculately dressed despite being lost and weary but this is the 1960s.

The mythology of an eternal flame that grants everlasting life – at a cost – is central to these films as is the deceit and betrayals that go with people's lust for what they cannot have.

Sit back and enjoy the ride.
