Blood on My Shoes (1983)

Agents across the globe take turns spying on and double-crossing one another in an attempt to locate a valuable formula encrypted in the music code.
An obscure Franco, apparently loosely based on Edgar Wallace's story 'Sanders of the River.', little-seen shoestring comedy/action/spy/thriller. A quintessential cast, Vernon goes characteristically and  gloriously over the top as the murdered - or is he? - missile inventor in full Mad Scientist key. Lina charms as a cabaret singer...or is she a spy? Or is she both? And Mayans is the most laid-back, unflappable tough guy you'll ever see.
Music plays a prominent role, in different ways...beyond the typically-awesome minimal jazz soundtrack (credited to Pablo Villa...aka Daniel White, a regular Franco collaborator...though some sources credit the music here to Franco himself).

Play Motel (1979)

Very rare giallo and a wicked slice of Italian exploitation cinema. This is the xxx edition, presented in wide screen with English subtitles.
Eat your heart out, Norman Bates! Your uncanny motel only has a dead mother in the basement whereas, at Play Motel, there's kinky sex, severe blackmail and sadistic killing going on. This movie is a strange little outcast in the wonderful Italian sub genre of gialli. It honestly has a murder-story to tell, but it's more than obviously inferior to the incredibly large portions of rancid, gratuitous and semi-pornographic sex on display! Wealthy persons, mostly married but physically unsatisfied, gather here to make ALL their sexual fantasies come true. This includes dressing up like Satan and nuns, but also S&M and even intercourse with a bottle of champagne! However, these poor little perverts are unaware that the motel is also the home base of a blackmailing-network. Shortly after their visits, the guests receive incriminating photographical evidence of their little sleazy escapades and a demand to pay huge sums of money or else the pictures will be handed over to the media. When murder inevitable follows, the police (unorthodoxly, I may add) instructs a couple of actors to go undercover and infiltrate inside the dubious motel. This is an odd but strangely addictive movie, completely without suspense or surprises, yet extremely entertaining. The murder-plot and the killer's identity are the by far the most predictable I've ever seen, but you never seem to bother about this as the film introduces – oh yes – numerous gorgeous and naked women! The music, particularly the title song that can be heard whenever a couple checks into room number 4, is very catchy and fun. "Play Motel" is 100% pure and genuine TRASH, but a definite must for fans of Italian cult cinema.

The Birds (1963)

The Birds (1963): Hitchcock helped to pioneer the "Nature Strikes Back" school of horror with this tale of flocks of nasty birdies peckin' the heck out of the local citizenry in a California coastal town. My older sister is still scared of birds to this day. With Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection [Blu-ray] (Region Free)

The four stars are an accurate rating of the transfer quality of most of the films in this collection. A few rate five stars ("Vertigo", "The Birds" and "Rear Window", for example).
But there are real defects in two of the titles in this set: Both "Marnie" and "Family Plot" were given slipshod transfers. "Marnie" particularly (a film I consider one of Hitchcock's masterpieces) has visual specks throughout, and some scenes of "weak" color. If you don't believe me, just go to a scene mid-way in the film and freeze the frame on a closeup. You'll see what seems a shabby grill on the faces. The images aren't clear and seemingly form a grill pattern. ("Frenzy" also exhibits flaws but not as seriously as those two.) These problems are obviously due to a lack of quality control in mastering these discs. To see the difference compare these two titles to "The Birds" or "Rear Window" and check the clarity and brightness of their color images in a freeze-frame. This crappy transferring is reprehensible for Universal in not taking the proper care to make sure the master Hitchcock has been given the treatment he deserves. They made so much money from the great works by this brilliant filmmaker they could have at least given ALL these films the highest quality treatment in Blu-ray technology!
This is certainly a trivial point, but also demonstrating Universal's inherent sloppiness, is that on a few of the discs, the spectacular new Universal corporate logo is actually shown TWICE in a row through an error in the disc making! (Note: I noticed this only in the UK region-free release!)
Most of the other discs are very good to superb, but these two (and some transferring flaws in "Frenzy" as well) could be enough for many to reject this set. I won't return it because most of the discs are essential to anyone's collection at it is, but I will continue to hope that in the future a new Blu-ray master of "Marnie" will be redone and made available in a beautiful transfer! UNIVERSAL OWES IT TO EVERYONE WHO LOVES THE ART OF CINEMA!
The technicians at Universal who are responsible for these shabby transfers should be ashamed of themselves!
PS: Many chastise reviewers for lowering the rating of great films because of flaws in the quality of the discs; They say only the film should be rated. I agree with them for the most part. But still, the low quality of several of these disc transfers, I think, should properly reflect at least one star lower to warn buyers. I admit if these discs were all superb the set would inarguably garner 5 stars by anyone remotely interested in film. These movies are among the greatest in the history of cinema. They ALL need to handled with the utmost of care as if they were treasures (which they are!).

Mondo Cannibale (1977)

Some movies are so awful that they cease to be movies. They become something much different and much worse, something less than film and more than Charades. Mondo Cannibal or Cannibal World or Mondo Cannibale, whatever you want to call it, is such a movie. It floats around in a gray area between cinema and home video that houses some of the worst ideas of the last hundred years. Bruno Mattei, AKA Vincent Dawn, is a master of this type of failure, specializing in late-night smut that only very rarely comes across as mildly funny and not totally worthless. His filmography is a laundry list of Italian crappola, story after story of zombies, cannibals, and monster sharks that tear humans limb from limb in a shower of red paint. Mondo Cannibal is no different, a movie that's not a movie, a pointless waste of time that fails to excite, illicit, or impress in any way.

In the world of American TV news, ratings are king. The monthly points reports decide which shows stay and which go, whose careers are advanced and whose are destroyed. There's no gray area; money talks and the only way to make money is to keep audiences and sponsors happy. For once-popular news anchor Grace Forsyte, this is bad news. Her program is losing popularity, after once being the paradigm of journalism. She & her team could keep audiences glued for hours with their sensationalist reports, stories of horror & danger that you couldn't pull yourself away from. But that was before, this is now, and Grace has fallen from, well, grace. She needs a boost, a new project, a return to the old style, something to spark her career and get the viewers that once loved her back in their easy chairs.

So, who does she turn to but her old pal Bob Manson. Bob was once part of the team, a valuable asset in the world of smutty journalism. He would stop at nothing for a story, break any rule, ignore any moral, do whatever it took. But the guy has turned soft, wanting to save the Amazon rainforest or some such nonsense, no longer caring about the highest rating & the most money. This change in attitude won't stop Grace, as she is determined to get the old team back together, hike into the jungles, and find something that supposedly doesn't exist; a native cannibal tribe. If she could get some blood & gore back on TV, her job would be secure, sponsors would line up at the door, and her career would be back on track. All she has to do is convince Bob, gather the troops, set off on a dangerous mission, disrupt the native culture, and kill some cannibals. All in a day's work, right?

I've seen some bad late-night comedies and b-movies, stories that barely make sense and are basically a vehicle for cheap humor, unrealistic violence, and a couple boobs. I respect the genre for what it is; a complete break from normal cinema, a ridiculous & absurd spoof on the seriousness of Hollywood. I can enjoy those movies for what they are and watch them knowing that they need to be judged a little different than regular movies. But I'll say it again; Mondo Cannibal isn't really a movie. It's a sad attempt at ...something ...by a group of ...someones...that never feels like a coherent collection of ideas brought together for one purpose. It's more an outdoor drama performed by idiots than an actual film, as it has no elements of story, depth, or purpose, and never feels like anything other than crap.

I'll try to clarify, because I don't want you to watch this movie in an attempt to understand why this movie isn't a movie after all. Hopefully I can save you the misery and the wasted time, though it's hard to describe the complete failure that is this project. There's zero humor; not a hint of pun or satire or gag, nothing at all. There's no sex appeal; a couple of women are seen topless, but not in a way that I would imagine anyone found arousing. There's no point; the story exists only to showcase people eating people for the sake of some twisted gross-out factor. And even that is done poorly, with fake blood & over-the-top gore that's about as believable as it is enjoyable to watch. The acting is bad, the editing is bad, the direction is bad, the plot is dumb, and oh yeah, it's dubbed from Italian to English, which may actually be the funniest part of the whole film.

Mondo Cannibal was based on Cannibal Holocaust, another Italian cannibal/horror film made in 1980. Perhaps the original is much better, or perhaps it at least feels relevant to its time period & genre. And perhaps this one was trying to copy that one, have the same feel, I don't know. It doesn't really matter; this was a horrible, horrible movie that shouldn't be watched by anyone that I can think of. The video was poor, the audio was bad, there's only one extra, and I see no reason that this film was ever made.
