Double Feature (Zapped! / Making the Grade)

Disc 1: Making the Grade WS
Lazy preppie Palmer Woodrow hires street-smart Eddie Keaton to go to school for him while he lives it up in Europe. Eddie falls in love with preppie gal Tracey, upsetting Biff, the Hoover Academy bully. When his bookie from the old neighborhood, Dice, comes to collect on Eddie's gambling debts and Palmer returns early from Europe, the the scheme slowly starts to unravel. Soon, Eddie can't even tell whose side he's really on.
Very funny movie, very entertaining characters. Palmer was the top dog, every scene he was in, every line he had, was HILARIOUS!!! Some great early work by the Diceman. His imitation of John Travolta was great! The Coach was very funny too; best scenes were when he stumbles into the X-rated movie, and when he comes home with the hookers. Gordon Jump (Big Guy from WKRP) was his usual bumbling, funny self. During the final credits, they say Palmer and Eddie will be back in "Tourista"; unfortunately for us they never made it. Big mistake, Tourista would have been great!

Bloodlust [DVD] [1961] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

"Bloodlust!" is a 1961 film from director Ralph Brooke, who is telling his own twisted version of Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game." The popular story of a big game hunter hunting men was first film in 1932 with Joel McRae and Fay Wray being hunted by Leslie Banks, and before Brooke got around to his version was remade as "A Game of Death" in 1945, again as "The Most Dangerous Game" but as a 7-minute short in 1953, and as "Run for the Sun" in 1956 with Richard Widmark and Trevor Howard. In the post-"Bloodlust!" era we have had "Woman Hunt" in 1975, "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" in 1987, "Deadly Prey" in 1988, and "Lethal Woman" in 1990, as suddenly the story take a decided turn from violence to sex. Suddenly, "Bloodlust!" looks pretty good in comparison, especially if you are into campy remakes.
The story begins with a pair of couples out for a charter boat ride (Oh, no: this film anticipates "Gilligan's Island!"). The captain spots an island he has never seen before and promptly passes out. So his passengers decide to go visit the island where Johnny Randall (Robert Reed), falls into a trap. Pete Garwood (Eugene Persson), Betty Scott (June Kenney), and Jeanne Perry (Joan Lora) get

Starlite Drive-In Theater: A Dusk Til Dawn Marathon (REGION 1) (NTSC) [DVD] [US Import]

Not a bad set to own if you like crappy movies in a weird sort of way (Like MST3K does). I found the movie "The Van" by far the best one of the lot, and "Van Nuys Blvd" to be second best. "Pom Pom Girls" would be good if they showed more "Pom Pom Girls" and less John Carradine. After those 3 though, most were very forgettable unless you want a nostalgic trip looking at old products and signs of the 50's, 60's & 70's. One nice surprise though were the cartoons and snack bar ads before the movie. Definitely was a plus. A bit of trivia, on "Hustler Squad", the one real dish of the movie (Anna) was a former Miss Finland in 1974 and runner up in Miss Universe. Watch the movie with the volume off unless you want to hear some really awful sound effects.

Devils of Darkness / Witchcraft (Double Feature)

This double feature offers two rarely seen mid-sixties British horror films. "Witchcraft" has Lon Chaney Jr. as a warlock seeking revenge on a rival family for desecrating his family's ancient cemetary. A centuries old witch arises from her tomb to carry out the murderous task. Good acting, atmosphere and a sublime sense of dread permeate the b&w film. And the witch, Vanessa (Yvette Rees) is truly creepy. Fine print of a good supernatural chiller. The 2nd disc is "Devils of Darkness", another rarely seen mid-60's color film about a centuries old satan-worshipping vampire (Hubert Noel) seeking a missing talisman and a new bride in modern day Chelsea among some bizarre, ultra-hip party people. Turns out he has a slavish following and his "old" bride (Carole Gray) is getting really jealous over his new find, a jaded model with very heavy eye make-up. This is a low budget, very strange film. An excellent print enhances what seems to be a dream-like quality that some may write off to low production values. It's virtually blood-less but has an odd style that makes it watchable. A good deal on both films and definitely worth a look, especially "Witchcraft". Enjoy.
DEVILS OF DARKNESS (1965) Stars William Sylvester. Deep beneath the town graveyard in hidden catacombs in a vampire cult that kidnaps the small town's victims for ancient sacrifices. Gothic horror from England.
WITCHCRAFT (1964) Starring Lon Chaney. One of Chaney's best later roles. He plays it grumpy right off the bat as he tries to stop a construction crew from bulldozing a cemetery. Bulldozer vs. Chaney, I'd lay my bets on Chaney. Then, we're swept into a surreal world of a small town and it's melodrama. Witchcraft lays bubbling (and boiling with toil and trouble) just below the surface. Lon gets to smack a cane around at people a growl a lot too.

Gorilla at Large/Mystery on Monster Island

This review is for "Gorilla at Large", the reason I bought this disc. In 1954, the 3-D craze was at its' peak--especially with horror films and this included the gorilla movie as scare factor. 1954 saw "Phantom of the Rue Morgue" and "Gorilla at Large" pawing their way into theaters in 3-D and Technicolor, with better than average budgets. "Gorilla at Large" is set in a seedy carnival around a lurid sideshow called "The Garden of Evil" where beautiful trapeze star Mlle. LaVerne ( a young and beautiful Anne Bancroft paying her starlet dues) swings seductively over a gorilla pit where mankiller ape Goliath reaches for her, threatening to yank her down at any moment. LaVerne's troubled and hot-tempered husband (a stoic Raymond Burr) jealously oversees her act and LaVerne. He also manages the carnival. Two problematic things occur: a hunky new stuntman for LaVerne ( a young, hunky Cameron Mitchell) for a dangerous new thrill in her act and a brutal murder. The murder shuts the carnival down and brings in a hardnosed cop (Lee J. Cobb). Everyone suspects Goliath and his sinister trainer when another murder occurs. But there's more than meets the eye in the "Garden of Evil". This is a well made, enjoyable thriller with two gorillas. One a stunt man in a bad gorilla suit and the other being Goliath. The stunt man is supposed to step in at key moments in LaVerne's act when the ape gets too close to thrill the audience. The carnival atmosphere is colorful, lurid and vivid. The acting is above par as is the cast---a young Lee Marvin has a comedy relief role as a dumb lanky cop. The 3-D effects are noticable with Goliath and the dizzying carnival rides. And there's a wonderful scene where Goliath goes on a rampage through the deserted carnival one night inadvertantly setting off the rides, causing the whole park to come alive like a haunted fairgrounds. Later, he reaches through a window for a screaming Bancroft as she lies seductively clad in a sexy negligee. The cheesecake factor with Bancroft is rampant throughout. This IS a beauty and the beast tale afterall but one with a twist---it's also a murder mystery. Who's committing the murders Goliath or someone in the stunt suit? And will Goliath finally have at the teasing seductress LaVerne? See this for cheesy but fun 50's thrills and watch as soon-to-be-stars pay their dues in a gorilla movie. "Gorilla at Large" is a genuine time capsule from the 3-D 50's complete with a better than average cast, in gorgeous Technicolor and preserved in a nice print on this disc. Worth owning for old Hollywood star watchers. Enjoy. And don't make Goliath mad....

Chosen Survivors / The Earth Dies Screaming (Double Feature)

Another Midnite Movie double feature masterpiece! CHOSEN SURVIVORS concerns a group of eleven men and women chosen (by the government) to be the ones who wait out WWIII. Yep, they get to repopulate the planet! Luckily, our beloved elected officials have thought of everything, sending these folks deep beneath the earth. Once there, they are greeted by a pre-recorded message telling them that the world has been destroyed. Tensions start to build as each person tries to comprehend what has happened. Unfortunately, things go badly, as a massive swarm of vampire bats somehow infiltrate the underground facility, hungry for the red stuff! Richard Jaeckel (Grizzly, Day Of The Animals, The Dark) is the military engineer. Bradford Dillman (Bug, Piranha) is the psychiatrist who just might know something the others don't. Jackie Cooper (Superman 1 and 2) is the slimy corporate executive of the bunch. CS is a nice claustrophobic thriller. THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING is sort of the british version of TARGET EARTH. The movie opens with a train crashing, a plane plummeting from the sky, etc. It seems that some alien force has unleashed poison gas on mankind! Soon, a few survivors find each other and attempt to make sense of it all. Our heroes are hunted by lumbering, annoyingly slow robots. Also, some re-animated zombies w/ eyes like boiled eggs are shambling around. Watch for Dennis Price (Horror Hospital, Tower Of Evil) as a sneaky jerk with selfish plans of his own. Both of these films are quite re-watchable. A terror-ific double bill...

CHOSEN SURVIVORS (1974) Stars Jackie Cooper. A group of "survivors" is chosen by the government. These people are taken to a hidden underground bob shelter/complex. Nuclear destruction is coming to the surface and these people are meant to be the ones to continue the human race after the fallout subsides. But the underground shelter complex is being invaded by millions of vampire bats...that are hungry.

THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING (1965) Stars Willard Parker, Virginia Field, Dennis Price and Vanda Godsell. Directed by Hammer's Terrence Fisher. Alien robots invade earth and bring the dead back to life. White-eyed zombies. Yeaaaaachh. This movie was much cooler than I thought. Creepy and well-acted, though short (about 60 minutes) Very enjoyable!

Sexorcism Double Feature (2 Disc DVD)

From the vantage point of the 21st century, the 1970s seems like a wild and woolly time, a period when artists and entertainers took advantage of the strides made in the 1960s and created work that was ground-breaking… and in many cases uniquely bizarre. The two "adult" films included in the Sexorcism collection belong in the latter category — they’re gonzo creations that mix horror clichés with hardcore action, contain surprising plot twists, and boast the sort of tacky costumes and makeup that scream "Seventies!" They are also wildly sincere, meaning that even though the moviemakers worked for purely commercial reasons, they added perverse little grace notes to exercise their imaginations and, in the case of The Devil Inside Her, to indulge a dark taste for sex.

The directors of both pictures have acquired cults, in no small part because of the singular strangeness of their output. The director of Sacrilege (1971), Michel J. Rogers, may have coined the term "incredibly strange" that has been used to describe cult/camp favorites, but Zebedy Colt, the man who made The Devil Inside Her (1977), seems to have been an incredibly strange figure off-camera as well as on. Whatever the case may be, they both made adult cinema that was light years away from the deadeningly predictable fare churned out today.

• SACRILEGE (1971)
