Killer Fish (1979 / Blu-ray)

Jewel thieves attempt to recover treasure from piranha infested waters. Mistrust and betrayals happen amongst the gang in the quest for gold.
The title "Killer Fish" is a blunt instrument, but it doesn't precisely describe the 1979 feature. Instead of being a movie solely dedicated to an underwater massacre, "Killer Fish" is actually more of a disaster extravaganza mixed with a heist film, with piranha activity worked into the effort at a few choice moments. Instead of conjuring a frenzy, director Antonio Margheriti keeps the picture low to the ground, working a routine of double-crosses and explosions instead of celebrating the unique threat the titular menace provides.
There's a beefy late-70s cast in "Killer Fish" who've come to play, with Lee Majors leading an ensemble that's surprisingly game to play up the absurdities of the story. Trouble is, the picture is too slack to frighten or enthrall, imagining itself as more of a sophisticated battle of wits than a down and dirty B-movie that involves piranha attacks.

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.: The Complete Series

Shazam! CBS DVD and Paramount have released Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.: The Complete Series, a single volume, 24-disc collection of the CBS smash-hit sitcom that ruled the Nielsens during its 1964-1969 run. Starring Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton (one of television's most accomplished, and least appreciated, comedy teams), Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. absolutely enraged elitist "television critics" and baffled bitter social commentators who lamented the series' massive popularity as a sure sign that 1960s TV was a cultural wasteland of science-fiction, fantasy, and hillbilly junk, aimed at the lowest common denominator. Affording these helpful purveyors of aesthetic tastes their proper due respect, tens of millions of weekly viewers in "fly-over" country promptly sounded a Bronx cheer to their "betters," and went right back to enjoying the silly, sweet (and beautifully executed) antics of Private Pyle and Sergeant Carter, in the process making Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. a truly iconic comedy series that survives to this day in syndication, and with good reason: it's funny as hell. I didn't see anything new here in terms of transfers or extras, compared to earlier single season DVD releases of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (the extras all come on season one), so if you have those sets already, there's no need to double dip. However, anyone new to the show (as well as those fans of its host series, The Andy Griffith Show) will want this set. Got that, you knuckle-headed, goldbricking goof-offs?

Bitchcraft (1997)

Rockbitch was originally formed as Red Abyss by bassist Amanda, who drew other band members from the matriarchal, polygamous pagan community of which she was the founder. Musically, Red Abyss drew on jazz, funk and rock influences dominated by singer Julie's Janis Joplin-influenced vocals. In time, its music took on harder punk and metal edginess. Red Abyss switched to the Rockbitch name when the lineup changed ; however, it nearly folded because audiences weren't responding. The band blamed male-dominated apathy.

At its intended last gig (at a biker festival),the decision to incorporate the orgiastic, pagan sex from its home life into the stage act gave birth to Rockbitch. The band toured Germany, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, the UK, (but were banned in Scotland) , Italy, Spain, Slovenia and Estonia and did a promotional tour that involved Canada (but were eventually also banned without having played) , while instituting its new theme of liberation through sexual freedom.

Rockbitch became infamous not only for performing live sex acts, but also doing so with audience members via "The Golden Condom". At a point during its show, a condom was tossed to the crowd and whomever caught it (male or female) was taken backstage for sexual relations with one or more band members. This led to critics saying they tried to sell bad music through sex; however, fellow musicians from disciplines as varied as jazz (bassist Jonas Hellborg) and funk/rock (Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers) have voiced their appreciation.

Rockbitch toured widely from approximately 1998 until 2002, meeting increasing resistance from authorities, particularly English town councils who often banned its concerts. Many of the Rockbitch crowds consisted of drunken lads seeking nudity, not typially interested in any "message"; however, Rockbitch also attracted followers that seemingly understood the band's message and they consisted mainly of women.

It was local authorities, not the public itself, who caused a struggle. Babe stated in the program "Anna in Wonderland" : "Rockbitch had no problem with lads out for seeing breasts, as they were a component of the audience, there were always others seeing the deeper meaning and both groups had a good time. They generally made up for a great combined atmosphere".

Outside the UK (and censorship problems it also encountered in some states of Germany) March 2008 audiences were sympathetic, particularly in Holland, where they drew vast crowds of men and women from all walks of life.

The Rockbitch lineup became entirely female . Original lead guitarist The Beast retired, taking over management/production. Babe moved into lead guitar duties (from rhythm) while Luci, previously a "Stage Slut" (one of the nude dancers and sexual band/crowd liaisons) instead strapped on a rhythm guitar.

Members lent their voices to female and sexual issues, were sponsors of the Sex Maniacs Ball (now Night of the Senses) founded by Tuppy Owens, openly voiced their admiration for sexual politics icons such as Annie Sprinkle and Betty Dodson, and generally put in a good word for open female sexuality as a healthy part of human nature. Via the Rockbitch website, on which members could also view their community life, the band had contact with straight/bi/lesbian women reaching as far as Borneo, Chile, Japan, India and the US, all of whom expressed a sense of empowerment and justification by the stated beliefs of Rockbitch. After the release of its first studio album, "Motor Driven Bimbo", which received critical acclaim in many countries (OOR Magazine in The Netherlands, the UK, and Japan), Rockbitch was dropped by its record company for refusing to remove sex and nudity from its stage act. A second, goth-influenced album called "Psychic Attack", which featured the song "I Wish I Were" written by American poetess Erzsebet Beck, was never released. Following continued pressure about its sexually driven themes and performances, Rockbitch ceased performing in 2002 and was the subject of a 30-minute documentary on BBC Choice the same year [Anna in Wonderland ] and an hour-long documentary broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK in 2003. [This is Rockbitch] In 2005, the entire latter-day Rockbitch lineup emerged under the name MT-TV. This was a music-only project—no sex or nudity of the Rockbitch days—but it incorporated stage theatrics. After a UK tour in summer 2005, they performed throughout the United States.

Demon of the Lute (1983)

From first-time director Lung Yi Sheng comes Demon Of The Lute, a 1983 fantasy swordplay epic featuring a ragtag group of heroes as they face off against a demonic force for evil! Chock full of fantastical characters blessed with otherworldly powers, enchanted weapons, and the remarkable ability to defy gravity at will, Demon Of The Lute is a comic book influenced wuxia sure to tickle the fancy of martial arts fans both young and old.
A number of the regular Shaw Bros. cast appear in this really silly film about magic swords, a magic bow and arrows, magic lutes and so on. Everybody is on wires at least half the time and all the weapons used are absurd.

Does that make this a bad film? Well... I enjoyed it after it became clear that this was intended for a younger audience (at least I hope it was). Giant axes, remote controlled flying swords, a chariot drawn by dogs, a guy with an arm that can stretch 20 feet, fighting scissors, a bird man, exploding... wait, that's enough, you get it. The lute of the title will remind people a bit of "Kung Fu Hustle". The little girl in the film is really good. She keeps up with the other actors.

Call Girl (2007)

Maria (Soraia Chaves) a sensual call girl, is hired by Mouros (Joaquim de Almeida) to seduce Meireles (Nicolau Breyner), the Mayor of Vilanova, so that he can authorize a multinational to build a high quality resort. However, Madeira (Ivo Canelas) and Neves (Jose Raposo), PJ police detectives, discover the evidence of corruption and begin to investigate Meireles. Everything becomes even more complex when Madeira finds out that Maria, the passion of his life, is the bait that will force the politician to give way.

In my opinion this is one of the best movies made in Portugal. Even though I am not a movie expert, I believe that the comments made above by Rui Resende are a little bit too harsh. As a Portuguese citizen, he should know that - we rarely produce such good movies. If this script would be produced in Hollywood, it would certainly be a hit. So Thank you very much Mr. Vasconcelos.

Rainbow Man (1949)

Yuri Kobata is the main suspect of a murder/arson case. School friend Mimi Simikai and her boyfriend Ryousuke Akashi start an investigation to prove Yuri’s innocence. Yuri’s alibi leads to the mysterious Maya house located in the middle of nowhere. The creepy Maya family who lives there consists of a deranged painter, a cat lady, and a man researching spectral lights. Slowly people begin dying while yelling the words “rainbow, rainbow, rainbow!” The mystery unravels into more than Mimi and Ryousuke bargain for. Filmed in black and white, but in a unique sequence, a rainbow appears in color before each murder in the movie.

Based on a 1947 story by romance/detective novelist, Kikuo Tsunoda (Tsubanari Ronin and Dokuro-sen). Special visual effects were provided by cinematographer, Tatsuyuki Yokota and the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya. All topped off with a music score by Akira Ifukube!

Death Becomes Her (Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

Directed by the amazing Robert Zemeckis, "Death Becomes Her" features a clever script, an awesome cast, and mind-blowing special effects that most Hollywood films lack nowadays. The film centers on the eternal quest for beauty and youth by an aging Hollywood starlet, Madeline Ashton, (played by the brillant Meryl Streep). Her high school rival, Helen, (Goldie Hawn), brings her latest beau to meet Ashton after a campy performance in a musical based on "Sweet Bird of Youth" (get the theme already?).
When Madeline runs off with Helen's fiance (Bruce Willis) Helen falls into a demented state and becomes obese and determined to get even with Madeline. After discovering a secret potion sold by a Hollywood witch (Isabella Rosellini) both Helen, and later Madeline regain their youth, vitality, and beauty. However, all this comes with strings involving immortality.
The wonderful script pokes fun at many stereotypes, rumors, and realities Hollywood is well-known for. From plastic surgery to the fact that no one has never met a neighbor in Los Angeles, the script is intelligent scriptwriting at its' best. The special effects by Industrial Light and Magic which has Helen walking with a hole through her midsection, and Madeline walking with a twisted neck are incredible to watch. One thing I adored about this film was the wicked, dark, and diabolical score by Alan Silvestri that incorporates harps and vengeful theme throughout the film.
The film's ending featuring a legion of Hollywood's undead (including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and James Dean)is hysterical and even the names of the two main characters, Madeline ("Mad" as in crazy) and Helen ("Hell" as in hellish) is genius. Personally along with "She-Devil," "Heathers," and "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills," this film ranks as one of the best black comedies to come out in recent years. A must-see for everyone!

Classic Monsters Spotlight Collection [Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from Black Lagoon] (Universal's 100th Anniversary)

The Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection [Blu-ray] was too expensive, so I bought the DVD set. The product came in the mail today, and it arrived in great condition. It had 4 great movies for a great price. The movies included were, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. These are the 1999 DVD versions of the films, but the quality was pretty good for these older movies. I just watched Frankenstein on my Play Station 3, and it looked great. I know the picture is not as good as the Blu-ray set, but it still looked very impressive. I love all of these films, but Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein still remain my favorites(Frankenstein is probably the first horror movie I ever saw).Dracula is another one of my favorites. Bela Lugosi is classic as Dracula. Creature from the Black Lagoon was good, but not great. Over all,the quality is great, and you could watch these over and over again. And what more would you ask than that?

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Horror (House of Wax 1953 / The Haunting 1963 / Freaks / Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 1941)

This is a two-sided DVD that contains two versions of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic. As many other reviewers here have said, the 1932 Frederick March version is far superior to the 1941 Spencer Tracy version. The older version, directed by a 34-year-old Rouben Mamoulian, is a masterpiece and part of movie history. The later version, directed by Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz director Victor Fleming, seems like an uninspired copy of the earlier one. Frederick March understood the role and seemed to revel in it. But, oddly, while he overacts a bit as Jeykyll, he seems totally believable as the monstrous Hyde. Tracy seemed uncomfortable with both personalities, playing Jekyll as too much of a saint and Hyde as too much of a leering sadist. March conveys the personality of Hyde as joyfully enervated by the full release of Jeykll's baser instincts. His Hyde has fun with his own badness. Tracy's just drowns in it.

The Boris Karloff Collection (Tower of London / The Black Castle / The Climax / The Strange Door / Night Key)

No other name is as synonymous with screen terror as Boris Karloff. After skyrocketing to international stardom in Universal's Frankenstein and The Mummy, this film icon continued to break ground in an electrifying slate of popular horror classics. Now see this unrivaled movie legend in five of his most spellbinding and memorable roles in this collector's set that cements Boris Karloff's status as a true giant of American cinema. Night Key (1937): Karloff ignites the screen as the ingenious inventor of a security system who is kidnapped by a gang of burglars and forced to help them commit robberies. Tower of London (1939): Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff star in this horrifying true tale of a ruthless king's rise to power with the help of his mad and murderous executioner. The Climax (1944): In his first color feature, Karloff is terrifying as a mad doctor whose insane jealousy over a beautiful opera singer may once again drive him to murder. The Strange Door (1951): As the servant of an evil nobleman, Karloff plots to free the madman's helpless prisoners but finds himself facing the horrors of the dungeon's deathtrap. The Black Castle (1952): Karloff is mesmerizing as a doctor who risks his own life to save the captives of a mad count in this gripping tale of betrayal and revenge.
